SFD: Change is FOSSible!

Yes, that’s tomorrow alright, September 18, 2010! Join the rest of the world as we all celebrate software freedom with the theme Change is FOSSible!

While there are a lot of SFD events around the country as well, if you are around the vicinity, you’d might want to check out the events happening in UP Diliman, organized primarily by Computer Professionals’ Union (CPU), UP.NET and UP Linux Users’ Group (UnPLUG)

Note that Mozilla will also be one of the major sponsors of the event, and if you’re lucky, some free Mozilla stuff are due abound!

I personally will be lecturing at one of the many breakout sessions they will be having in the afternoon under FOSS for Art: GIMP Session, at the MTIC Lab, College of Education UP Diliman.

For the rest of the schedule, click here.

See you there!

Being a open-source enthusiast and casual Linux user, I happen to be a member of the UP Linux Users’ Group (UnPLUG). In one of their meetings, they have discussed the problems they have encountered in the recruitment process, and as a new school year begins, its advertising time for most of the student organizations in UP.

The goal I had for the ad campaign is to keep the statements as simple but as striking as possible. The color is black text against white background, and the graphics are kept to a minimum (the only graphic is the UnPLUG logo in the lower right) to prevent any “distractions” to the message, as well as making the posters photocopy-friendly. The target locations/market of the first three posters are for the general, non-hardcore-geek public who might be interested in Linux but don’t really know where to start.

Considering how easy it is to join UnPLUG (as the message says, we only need your curiosity and advocacy – heck we don’t even have the traditional applicant process that most UP orgs have, let alone have a re-aff fee), a lot of individuals don’t quite know how to approach us. Its also in the ad, with a link that signs you up to a Google form or can drop a text by one of our members.

So here they are, ranging from the main ad to the most daring ones.

You Don't Have to be a Geek

User-Friendly is a Myth

Wala ka sa Lolo Ko

Sudo Join Us

This ad was targeted in locations where students would generally know Linux, being exposed in it during their programming classes, but fail to see Linux’s use beyond that. It admittedly uses the XKCD webcomic pun as well.

Makibaka Huwag Matakot

This last ad is a bit edgy, but some of us said “what the heck”. After all, UP does have different flavors of activism, and that’s what’s important. We may not be taking our battle to the streets, but the advocacies we are fighting for are equally important as well. In this age of information, we strive to give more people access to computers, thus empowering them bit by bit (or byte by byte, if you know what I mean).

UPDATE: in the spirit of Open Source, here are the original XCF (GIMP) copies of the ads in 8.5×11 inches poster format.

Let your voice be heard. Log in at www.botongisko2010.com and be part of history. Let the nation see who we, UP students, are voting for in the upcoming 2010 elections.

Armed with your UP Student Number and your last name, just log in to the aforementioned website during the online poll period and cast your vote!

Powered by Halalan, the same secure, free and open-source voting system used and implemented successfully in the past two UP USC elections!

UnPLUG Team at IBM DevNight

UnPLUG Team at IBM DevNight

Last night’s IBM Developer’s Night was a mix-match of good and frustrating at the same time. It was pretty clear what IBM wanted us to do there, and it was also a good opportunity for them to showcase something that of course most of the crowd (they think) would benefit from: their new Innovation Center. The concept was sound.

Of course, most of the students that were there came for the food (after all food is an essential factor in any event). So it was a bit disappointing when the catering services they hired seemed to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of students invading the buffet table.

During the show-and-tell portion, our simple delegation managed to merely pull something off, and it turned out that we won a token for having the best presentation (I still think part of it was because we used the word powered by an IBM server). Joke aside, I think our concept was plain simple and straight to the point. Oh, and boring stuff aside, it was much better than plugging in our org’s events.

Some other random stuff I was thinking of during the event:

  • How much money did they spend for this event? (considering how many people will actually participate directly on it)
  • I saw many students sporting DSLR’s. Its a sad thing that really few of them know how to use it (have these kids even heard of the term “aperture ring?”)
  • Does everybody really use Facebook nowadays? I’m still asking myself if I’ll join the bandwagon or wait till the next best thing that comes in the internet (or is this the next best thing for years to come?)

Yep, that’s November 23, 2009 (Monday) at the University of the Philippines Diliman Main Library. I think I’ll also be having a talk here (representing UnPLUG), so I’ll update people with what we’ll be doing here.

Anyway, if you’re interested, please register in here. Its free, so don’t worry. Heck, you might even win a prize or two if you come (or food or whatever).
