After nearly a year, they’ve broken decade-old Oricon chart records, Blu-Ray sales and perhaps challenging NGE-levels of milking merchandise out of their anime series… and they’ve just played their last gig.
K-ON! aired with no fanfare in the 2009 spring season anime offerings, but the slice-of-life story of four (then five) high school students as they go about their daily lives quickly became a hit. While Kyoto Animation has been in the limelight in the recent years for pulling off something phenomenal (Haruhi in 2006), and a show totally about nothing (Lucky Star is said to be the Jerry Seinfield of anime); K-ON! proved that one can be, ironically, epic and mundane at the same time.
The story starts with three Light Music Club members looking for another member to prevent their club from dissolving, and when the eccentric and clumsy Yui Hirasawa comes along, their adventures begin. Whether it be practicing for the Cultural Festival, cleaning up their clubroom, or loafing around for some afternoon tea, they did it so ordinarily that its almost a miracle how it gets to be interesting in the first place.
Perhaps its the music (really, if your song titles are Fuwa Fuwa Time or My Love is a Stapler that’s gotta stick to your head for some time). Or the script dynamics. Or possibly the punchlines, or how each character has their unique quirks and such. Perhaps its how Kyoto Animation animates it. But the combination of all those makes K-ON! such a memorable watch.
I highly recommend this series, for whatever its worth. You’d might not finish it from end-to-end, or you’d might not memorize each song Houkago Tea Time plays, but you’ll surely enjoy watching an episode or two, especially if you’re musically-inclined.
