An encore would be great, though...

After nearly a year, they’ve broken decade-old Oricon chart records, Blu-Ray sales and perhaps challenging NGE-levels of milking merchandise out of their anime series… and they’ve just played their last gig.

K-ON! aired with no fanfare in the 2009 spring season anime offerings, but the slice-of-life story of four (then five) high school students as they go about their daily lives quickly became a hit. While Kyoto Animation has been in the limelight in the recent years for pulling off something phenomenal (Haruhi in 2006), and a show totally about nothing (Lucky Star is said to be the Jerry Seinfield of anime); K-ON! proved that one can be, ironically, epic and mundane at the same time.

The story starts with three Light Music Club members looking for another member to prevent their club from dissolving, and when the eccentric and clumsy Yui Hirasawa comes along, their adventures begin. Whether it be practicing for the Cultural Festival, cleaning up their clubroom, or loafing around for some afternoon tea, they did it so ordinarily that its almost a miracle how it gets to be interesting in the first place.

Perhaps its the music (really, if your song titles are Fuwa Fuwa Time or My Love is a Stapler that’s gotta stick to your head for some time). Or the script dynamics. Or possibly the punchlines, or how each character has their unique quirks and such. Perhaps its how Kyoto Animation animates it. But the combination of all those makes K-ON! such a memorable watch.

I highly recommend this series, for whatever its worth. You’d might not finish it from end-to-end, or you’d might not memorize each song Houkago Tea Time plays, but you’ll surely enjoy watching an episode or two, especially if you’re musically-inclined.

Things got pretty hectic, so I have a bit to catch on to, but I was able to find time to get a sneak-peek at what the Kyoto Animation’s hit sequel has got to offer. I enjoyed K-ON!’s first season, but knowing how KyoAni messed up with Suzumiya Haruhi on the succeeding installment, I am a bit wary, and scared…

Yui's ready to rock again!

Yui's ready to rock again!!

The episode starts pretty much like a typical K-ON episode, which probably means good news. Nothing has really changed on the members (for now), except that they are on their third year and there’s the challenge of finding new members so they don’t leave their lower-classman Azusa ala-Yuki Nagato in Haruhi.

Its great to see Yui still in her usual absent-minded-ADD self, Ritsu being perky and energetic, Mugi with her lovely cakes and tea, Mio being a moeblob with her quirks and Azusa as Mio’s moeblob apprentice. Of course, its also welcoming to see adviser Sawako-chan, and whatever she’s up to (more meido outfits for us I guess).

The songs sound catchy, though the OP makes me really wonder if Yui’s seiyuu is a chipmunk. The themes also tend to be a bit cake-y, if not literally (as seen from the ED) but its tolerable. It somewhat reminds me of Maria + Holic OP, I don’t know why. Lovely lovely.

I'm ready for some K-ON action...

As long as they don’t pull off an Endless Eight-esque move, I think K-ON will do just fine. Much to look forward to in this series.
